What is the average age of students?
Generally students are aged between 11 and 16 years old.
How are the children grouped in class?
Students are grouped by age and ability.
What do students study
in class?
Emphasis is placed on Irish as a spoken language. We also cover
grammar and help prepare students for exams.
Do students have to
speak as Gaeilge all the time?
Students must speak as Gaeilge for the duration of the course.
Will I get sent home
if I say one word of Bearla?
While every effort is made to help students there must at all times
be more Gaeilge than Bearla in each sentence. Students who persistently
converse as Bearla will get sent home.
Can I bring my mobile
phone?
Students may bring their phones to the Coláiste . On arrival
students must hand over their phones to an Bean an Tí. Mobiles
will be made available to the students during 22:00 and 22:30 under
the supervision of an Bean an Tí.
Are their any additional
expenses?
There is a €5 charge for laundry payable to an Bean an Tí.
We recommend €50 pocket money.
Are the children well
supervised?
Students are fully supervised at all times.
Where do students stay?
Students stay in Gaeltacht approved homes with local families.
What is the food like?
The Bean an Tí provides a wide variety of healthy balanced
meals. All dietary requirements are catered for.
How many to a house?
Usually there are between 12 and 16 students sharing each house.
Can I stay with a friend?
Groups of 2/3 children may be accommodated together.
When can parents visit?
Parents may visit at any time during the course.
Where is the Coláiste?
The Coláiste is situated on Achill, Co. Mayo. Take the road
from Achill Sound towards Keel for 5km. At the sign for Dubh Éige
take a left hand turn and continue to the village of Dubh Éige
a distance of 5km.
Where does the bus stop?
The bus departs Lucan @ 13:00
Mullingar (Hammils on the N4) @13:45
Longford (Texaco on the Strokestown Rd.)@ 14:30
Castlebar (McDonalds) @ 16:15
A bus may be organized from Limerick depending on numbers.
Are the buses belted?
All buses traveling from Dublin are fully belted.
